By air: the case for flying
The flight from Islamabad to Skardu is one of the great scenic flights anywhere — on a clear morning you pass Nanga Parbat’s flank and descend between peaks straight into the valley. You land, and within the hour you can be drinking tea at Shangrila on Lower Kachura Lake.
The maths is simple: a 5-day trip by air gives you roughly 4 full days in Skardu. The same trip by road gives you about 1. If your leave is short, flying isn’t a luxury — it’s the difference between a holiday and a commute.
The honest downside: northern flights are weather-dependent. A few times each season, low cloud cancels departures. That’s why every By Air itinerary we sell carries a buffer plan — rebooking on the next flight at no service charge, or switching to the road plan with the price adjusted fairly.
By road: the case for the Karakoram Highway
The road journey is not a transfer — it’s a destination. Two days up the Karakoram Highway (or over Babusar Pass in season): the Indus gorge, the Rakaposhi viewpoint, chai stops in villages most travellers never see. People who drive up consistently tell us the journey was half the trip.
Road tours also cost less. Our 5 Days Hunza Valley group departure starts at PKR 27,500 per person, and the 6 Days Skardu by Road tour starts at PKR 31,500 — prices no flight-inclusive tour can match. And roads run in almost all weather, all season: no cancelled departures because of cloud over the airport.
- Choose by road if you have 8+ days to spare
- Choose by road for the lowest per-person price
- Choose by road if you love a road trip — the KKH is the world’s highest paved international road
Side by side
- Time: ~1 hour by air vs 2 days each way by road
- Cost: from PKR 125,000/person by air (5 days, Skardu) vs from PKR 27,500/person by road (5 days, Hunza)
- Reliability: flights are weather-dependent; roads run in almost all weather
- Best trip length: 5–7 days by air · 8+ days by road
- Experience: a spectacular flight vs a two-day mountain journey
Our verdict
Short trip, special occasion, or travelling with parents and small kids? Fly — and book an itinerary with a buffer day built in. Longer trip, tighter budget, or a photographer’s itinerary that wants the whole valley, not just the highlights? Take the road, and take it slowly.

Frequently asked questions
How reliable are flights to Skardu?

On our 5 Days Skardu By Air tour, yes — return air tickets from Lahore / Islamabad sit inside the PKR 125,000 per-person price, along with private transport, 4 nights’ hotel accommodation and daily breakfast and dinner. By-road packages include no flights, which is most of why they cost less.
